Crock-pot Cube Steak

This past week we had 80 degree temperatures followed up with a hard freeze!  When I went to work one day it was summer and when I left work it was winter.  I think I have whiplash!

With the return of cool (okay cold) weather, my thoughts of food head straight to warming comfort foods, you know things that warm you from the inside out.

Lately, my kitchen time has been limited due to a cabinet refinishing project (you've might have noticed I've missed a few weeks..sorry, I am feeling guilty), I needed to get a little more creative with meal preparation.   To help me, I turned to my crock-pot.  This is one helpful appliance and I should rely on mine more than I do.

This weekend, I purchased cube steaks at the grocery to make this quick and easy recipe (never mind that I had to explain to the fellow behind the meat counter that cube steak was not hamburger steak).

The end result doesn't look stellar on the plate, but you'll quickly forget about the lack of beauty attributes and photogenic qualities once you dig into a gravy slathered bite.  Of course you have to have mashed potatoes to accompany it to take advantage of the wonderful gravy!  Seconds please!

Crock-pot Cube Steak

Ingredients:

6 cube steaks
1 medium onion peeled and sliced into rings
1 can cream of chicken soup
1 can cream of celery soup
1 packet Lipton Onion Soup Mix
1/2 soup can of water
1/4 tsp. black pepper

Directions:

Peel, slice and separate the rings of one medium sized onion.

Place 2 cube steaks in the bottom of your crock-pot.
Top with onions and repeat.  Separating each addition of meat with onions.  This will help separate them later and avoid them being one melded mass of cube steak.

In a separate bowl, add the cream of soups, black pepper and water and mix it up.  Pour the soup mixture over the meat.
Sprinkle the onion soup mix on top, put the lid on the crock-pot and turn it on low.
Soon your kitchen will start to smell delicious and 6 hours later you will have a dinner!  Add a side of mashed potatoes to help enjoy the gravy an a salad or green veggie and you are ready to eat.

Note:  If you like cream of mushroom soup, I'm sure you can use that as well.  As for me, I'm not a fan, so I opted for a different combination.

...and That's What's Cooking at Cathy's ~ Enjoy!

    1. I made this today..... I was extremely disappointed in how it turned out. It was extremely salty and ended up in tiny pieces! My husband took one bite and said nope!!!

    2. Sorry Anonymous that you were disappointed. While I appreciate the feedback, my instructions for salt and pepper without quantities, so you were in control. I'd suggest trying without any additional salt, or minimal salt based on the soups you use and the amount of salt in those.

    3. Maybe anonymous should have test tasted it along the way...maybe adding more water...not cooking so long etc. Just a thought.

  11. Thank you for this tasty recipe. I tried it last night and woke up this morning with the house smelling wonderful. Where do I begin??? how the onions melted like butter, how well the steak was seasoned or how tender the steak was...not to mentioned the intoxicating smell..... one word---- YUM!!!! Thank you, I'm not a fan of Cream of Mushroom either so I was elated to find this and try it... I love it- I'm actually going to try it again with chicken..... Thanks again!

  13. how many does this serve?

    ReplyDelete
  14. It servers 6, one cube steak per person. If you have youngsters, I'd suggest a 1/2 serving, so you would get more.

  19. Can you cook this in the oven? If so what degree and how long?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I cook it low and slow after browning floured cube steaks. Keep water in pan, but don't cover meat. Put seasonings and onions on meat. I just simmer until tender, about 2-2 1/2 hours. Delicious! I also cook my round steak the same way, adding a bit of water as needed. Makes its own gravy!! Serve with mashed potatoes, rice or noodles

  20. Carla, I would think you could, although I've never tried it that way. I'd suggest browning the cube steaks, put them in a covered casserole with all the other ingredients, and bake it for a couple of hours in a 325 degree oven.

  21. If I put it on high how long should I leave it for...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I can't say with any confidence or accuracy how long to cook it on high nor guarantee results. With the soups being creamy, there could be a potential to cause the "gravy" to scorch or stick to the sides of the pot when cooked on High. Based on some Google searches I found someone saying that something that takes 7 hours on low could be done in 3 hours on high. If you decide to try it, please post back and let us know how it worked for you.

    1. Josey, Just skip the onions and use cream of celery soup or cream of mushroom soup and it will still be yummy. If you like bell peppers, you could use those instead of onions. Skip the onion soup mix as well, you won't miss it.

  24. Just came across this recipe. Hoping to use what I already have on hand, so can ground beef be used instead of cubed steak? And does that xhange the recipe in any way?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think you could use ground beef patties rather than cubed steak without changing the other ingredients if you have the same number of patties. The only thing to consider would be that cube steaks are relatively lean and depending on the fat content of your ground beef, it would likely result in a greasier gravy.

  25. I like this recipe.I decided to try it .I had used nine cube steak.U think that I get same results.

  26. I tried this recipe I was dispointed .cube steak didn't have any flavor maybe I should season meat before i place in crock pot .

    1. Sorry you were disappointed. However, we all have different taste buds, so I can't say for sure what you might need to adjust. If by flavor you mean salt, that's a personal preference. I find that the soups and onions provide lots of flavor. Did you adjust or substitute any of the ingredients?

  27. I have done cube steaks in the crockpot similar to your recipe but using only a packet of Pioneer Gravy Mix and water. Yumm! Less ingredients but still good.

  28. My mom and i do one can cream of celery, 3/4 can of water, one packet onion soup mix, and round steak 8 hours on low. Ive had people say it was too salty. Alot of people have different taste buds and like things more bland. We love this! Most everyone loves this with peas and mashed potatoes!

    1. I've used cream of celery too. I'm not a mushroom fan, so any cream soup, onion or celery will work fine. I'll have to try with with round steak sometime. I'm sure it is also delish!

  36. This was the best crockpot cube steak. It was so yummy. The only thing I changed was I used low sodium beef broth instead of water. It was fork tender and the gravy was outstanding. I bought some more to make it again. A must try. You wo t regret it.

  37. My Husband went for thirds on this dish- not great for his waistline but glad something soooo ez was also a big hit. It is just the two of us so I used 1/2 the amount if cube steak, still a whole onion sliced and one can of cream of mushroom soup (it’s what I had in hand and we like mushrooms) 1/2 Can of water and whole packet of onion soup mix. Meat was fall apart tender and lots of delicious gravy for some mashed potatoes. I may never make pot roast again! Thinking about adding some fresh sliced mushrooms and a splash of red wine next time for kicks! Will make again for company!

  43. I used cream of mushroom and add mushrooms as well. I tossed the onion soup and steaks in a bag so the flavor was evenly distributed. Then I layered the steak, onions an mushrooms. Turned out great. Thanks for the recipe.

  47. Chicken fried steaks are a favorite meal in our house and I am going to try this for tonight’s dinner!!! We have a Christmas display event tonight so it’s perfect and just in time for dinner!! I’m going to be using cream of mushroom instead of the cream of celery will that be okay?

  48. Just saw your post on Cubed Steak. I will have to try your version, for sure. Usually I just use cream of mushroom soup or golden mushroom soup with 1/2 can of water and the cubed steak in my instant pot for about an hour. I remember my mom frying her cubed steak in a cast iron skillet, then when they were done she would add water to the pan and simmer for a long time. It would make it’s on gravy. It was soooo good! Not healthy but good.

  49. You can use cream of celery and cream of potato, I only use name brands,I brown my cube steak keep mind onion soup mix is loaded with salt so don’t add any more salt, if you like less salt only use a half of the packet, stir it well,in the package spoon out to your liking, this is a great recipe with a few of your tweaks and you will not be disappointed.
